I love spending time in beautiful Groningen, which is the largest city in the north of the Netherlands and also my second visit. I definitely feel like home over here, which is a Good thing! 🙂
First thing you should know about Groningen is that, it is a university city home to around 25.000 students, who mostly use bikes. So please be aware of cyclist and watchful when you’re going about Groningen, which is a bike friendly city.
The most popular places I would recommend you to visit, are: Grote Markt square, which is a good starting point. If you are there during the week or weekend (Tuesday, Friday or Saturday 9.00-5PM, to be more specific) you are in for a treat. There is a market that sells anything from different kinds of flowers, vintage items or clothing, to freshly made bread and delicious sweet treats… Now if that doesn’t rock your boat, there is The Martinitoten or St. Martin’s Tower which is the highest church steeple in the city and is considered to be one of the main attractions, offering superb views. So please get yourself ticket at the tourist information centre and climb all the way to the top to admire this majestic city. Also, a visit to Groninger Museum, designed by Mendini, De Lucchi, Starck and Coop Himmelbau (1994), is another of my faves. This building with its futuristic architecture and colourful style, will blow you away. It displays an intriguing collection and fascinating exhibition of modern and contemporary art and this very quirky museum is only 10 min walk from Grote Markt. Open from Tuesday-Sunday 10am-5pm. Also make sure to look under the bridge when it opens to see the Delft Blue titles by W.Delvoye.
Lastly, before I conclude on the sites of Groningen, there is one more very special place that I regard as a `must see`. It is the main Central Train Station literally opposite the museum. This is the most beautiful architectural gem. Just take a walk in and see it for yourself, in my opinion there is nothing quite like it in the world.
Food wise? Groningen has many pub’s and restaurants and I’m sure you will find something that appeases your appetite. It might be a relief for some to know that everyone speaks English, so you shouldn’t have any problems ordering your food. Happy Dayzzzzzz!!!! 🙂
Ps. If you have any question or even a destination that you recommend, Please let me know. Otherwise enjoy 😉
